US Research Labs Face Scrutiny Over Unpunished Animal Welfare Violations

The 2025 Laboratory Animal Care Audit, published by the National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS), utilizes USDA inspection records to track the treatment of animals in scientific research. Analysis shows that 45 of the cited facilities are repeat offenders, with 16 laboratories appearing in all three annual reports released since 2023. Despite the documented nature of these abuses, only 24 facilities received an Official Warning of Alleged Violation, a measure that carries no fine or legal penalty.

Meredith Blanchard, Director of Advocacy & Sanctuary at NAVS, stated that the data reflects a failure to enforce existing animal welfare laws. The organization intends to address these findings during a webinar scheduled for October 6, titled "Paper Trails and Paths to Freedom." The session will feature policy experts and representatives from the Kindness Ranch Animal Sanctuary, focusing on the lack of institutional oversight and strategies for driving reform in scientific practices.
