Tusk Blames City Hall for Fatal Citi Bike Crash Involving Teen

A 15-year-old girl died Friday night in the East Village after being struck by an industrial truck while riding an electric Citi Bike, prompting a sharp rebuke from Bradley Tusk, who claims the city blocked safety measures that would have prevented minors from accessing the high-speed rentals.

Tusk, founder of Tusk Philanthropies, revealed that Citi Bike had finalized an age-verification system in May designed to restrict e-bike access to riders 16 and older. The project was halted by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Deputy Mayor Julia Kerson, who argued that biometric screening presented risks of bias and data privacy concerns. Tusk condemned the administration’s decision as a triumph of ideology over public safety, citing a 32% increase in e-bike crashes compared to last year. He called for the immediate implementation of the age-gating technology and suggested the City Council should remove Kerson from her post if she continues to block the initiative.
