Microsoft Brings Auto SR Upscaling to ROG Ally X Handhelds
Microsoft is expanding its Automatic Super Resolution feature to the Asus ROG Ally X, targeting docked gameplay on larger screens. By leveraging the device’s NPU to upscale resolution and stabilize frame rates, the company aims to provide a native-like visual boost to games that lack built-in upscaling support.

The feature, which functions similarly to Nvidia’s DLSS by rendering games at lower resolutions before upscaling, is now accessible to Xbox Insider program members. Microsoft positioned the tool specifically for docked mode, where hardware often struggles to maintain fluid performance on high-resolution displays. Unlike specialized upscalers that require game-level integration, Auto SR operates at the Windows level, supporting DirectX 10 titles and newer.
To ensure performance gains without taxing the GPU, the process utilizes the ROG Ally X’s integrated NPU. In addition to the upscaling preview, Microsoft and Asus are refining the docked experience. New updates include automatic screen switching when connected to a TV, Variable Refresh Rate support for compatible displays, and a Game Bar widget for managing resolutions and refresh rates without leaving the session. The update also streamlines library management, allowing users to launch and edit games from various PC storefronts directly through the Xbox interface.
