Global Wellness Summit to Target the New Transformation Economy
Memorable experiences are no longer enough to satisfy the modern consumer. As the wellness sector gathers for its 20th anniversary summit in Phuket this November, keynote speaker B. Joseph Pine II will argue that the industry must pivot from selling services to facilitating personal transformation.

The Global Wellness Summit, scheduled for November 10–13 at Angsana Laguna Phuket, aims to define the industry's next two decades by addressing a fundamental shift in consumer behavior. B. Joseph Pine II, co-author of the seminal book The Experience Economy, contends that businesses are currently failing to deliver on the promise of true change. While companies often market their offerings as transformative, most remain stuck in the cycle of selling commoditized goods and services.
Pine’s latest research, detailed in The Transformation Economy, identifies four core human aspirations: health, prosperity, wisdom, and purpose. He argues that wellness providers are uniquely positioned to lead this market if they transition from being service providers to becoming partners in a customer’s self-improvement journey. This requires a shift in business architecture consisting of three distinct phases: diagnosis, curated experiences, and long-term follow-through. According to Pine, when the customer becomes the product, the business model necessitates a radical departure from traditional retail or hospitality metrics.
Susie Ellis, chair and CEO of the Global Wellness Summit, noted that the event will provide delegates with a practical framework for this transition. The summit intends to bridge the gap between abstract branding and measurable outcomes, helping organizations across beauty, fitness, and medical longevity sectors move beyond the surface-level engagement that currently defines the $6.8 trillion market.
