Decoy Therapeutics Targets Filovirus Market via FDA Animal Rule Path

Cambridge-based Decoy Therapeutics is pivoting its AI-driven platform toward a pan-filovirus program, seeking to bypass traditional human clinical trials by utilizing the FDA Animal Rule. The company aims to secure non-dilutive government funding while positioning its antiviral candidates for future Priority Review Voucher eligibility.

The company’s IMP³ACT™ computational engine has successfully designed candidates showing activity against Ebola Zaire and Marburg viruses. One first-generation candidate demonstrated a seven-fold improvement in potency over remdesivir in cell-based assays. By targeting the conserved helical fusion core shared across filoviruses, the firm hopes to create a single prophylactic treatment effective against Ebola Zaire, Marburg, Sudan, and Bundibugyo strains.

Decoy plans to fund this development through public health partnerships and government grants, leveraging the FDA Animal Rule, which allows for regulatory approval based on animal model efficacy when human trials are not feasible. Beyond the biodefense utility, the program holds significant commercial potential. Successful approval of a filovirus candidate could grant the company a Tropical Disease Priority Review Voucher, a tradable asset that has historically commanded market values between $100 million and $180 million. CEO Rick Pierce noted that the firm is engineering these therapies for extended tissue residence, potentially enabling weekly dosing regimens for high-risk populations.
