Warren Urges Democrats to Test Trump’s ‘Mr. Veto’ Claim

After President Donald Trump unveiled a red cap bearing the word “VETO,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren challenged Democrats to pass legislation they support and make him decide whether to block it. The call follows the party’s midterm gains, which were significant but not large enough to override vetoes.

“If Donald Trump wants to be Mr. Veto, let’s test that out,” Warren wrote Thursday on X, responding to a White House photo of Trump with the hat. She said the new Democratic majority should pass bills aimed at lowering costs and reducing corruption. In a Thursday Time op-ed, Warren urged action to end the Iran war, reverse Republican health care cuts and expand coverage, establish universal child care, and repeal tax breaks for corporations and wealthy individuals. She also called for bans on federal officials’ stock trading and tougher scrutiny of technology companies, Wall Street executives and large corporations. Warren is expected to lead the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) also urged Democrats to challenge Trump to veto legislation. Her proposed agenda included ending the Iran war, canceling $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts, restoring Affordable Care Act tax credits, raising the federal minimum wage, ending tariffs and refunding consumers, requiring data centers to pay for their energy and water, and banning presidential and congressional stock trading.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), expected to chair the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, has said Democrats should pass Medicare for All and see whether Trump vetoes it. The plan, according to the article, would save more than 114,000 lives and $1 trillion annually. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) likewise called for action on affordability and taxes on the wealthy. “If Trump vetoes it, it will just show people that he’s on the side of billionaires,” he told Politico.

As of Friday, Democrats had at least 54 Senate seats and 253 seats in the House, according to the source. Van Hollen has also suggested Democrats should secure support for a “bold agenda” before backing Sen. Chuck Schumer for Senate majority leader.
