Piedmont Plans $600 Million Hospital Relocation in Newton County

The current hospital, which traces its origins to 1954, has faced limitations due to an aging physical plant and land constraints. Piedmont, which acquired the facility in 2015 when it was known as Newton Medical Center, has already funneled $70 million into the site to bolster local services. The new facility is intended to expand capacity beyond the existing 128-bed license and accommodate the population surge along the I-20 corridor.

Kevin Brown, president and CEO of Piedmont Healthcare, described the move as a commitment to the region's long-term health infrastructure. For the 1,000 employees and 700 medical staff members currently at Piedmont Newton, the relocation promises a transition from the outdated 1950s-era building to a modern clinical environment. The hospital currently serves as a critical hub for the area, recording 52,000 emergency department visits and nearly 8,000 inpatient admissions during the 2026 fiscal year.

This investment follows a broader five-year trend for the health system, which has poured nearly $2 billion into community expansions. With 28 hospitals in its network, Piedmont continues to prioritize its status as a nonprofit entity by focusing on facilities like the Primary Stroke Center in Covington. CEO Lindsey Petrini noted that the new hospital will ensure the system keeps pace with the demands of the surrounding community while maintaining the quality of care that has earned the site 11 consecutive A grades from the Leapfrog Group.
