AltaPointe Health Opens $15 Million Psychiatric Wing in Mobile
A ribbon-cutting ceremony in Mobile, Alabama, marked the completion of a $15 million expansion at BayPointe Hospital, adding 34 adult psychiatric beds to the facility. The project, bolstered by $6 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding, aims to address a critical shortage of inpatient mental health resources in the region.
The expansion lifts the hospital's total capacity from 104 to 138 beds, allowing the facility to accommodate a broader range of patients. Historically dedicated to children and adolescents, BayPointe began shifting its focus in 2025 by converting 24 existing pediatric beds for adult use. This new construction secures dedicated space for adults while maintaining essential services for younger populations.
Beyond clinical space, the project incorporates additional classrooms for students undergoing treatment and enhances the hospital's ability to process psychiatric evaluations referred by local probate courts. AltaPointe Health CEO J. Tuerk Schlesinger noted that the investment serves as a vital bridge for families seeking care close to home. Mobile County Commission President Connie Hudson emphasized that the facility fills a longstanding gap in local infrastructure, which previously lacked adequate inpatient resources for the adult population.
