Maple Leaf Foods to shutter two U.S. plants in production consolidation

The transition will unfold in phases over the next 12 to 18 months, according to the Mississauga-based company. CEO Curtis Frank stated that the current three-facility network is no longer sustainable, noting that underutilized capacity has driven structural costs too high. By centralizing operations at the Indianapolis Plant Protein Centre of Excellence, management aims to improve manufacturing efficiency and stabilize the business’s long-term profitability.

Despite the closures, the company maintains that the move is not a retreat from the plant-based sector. Instead, the consolidation is framed as a foundational step for the company's Fuel for Growth initiative. While production in Seattle and Turners Falls will continue during the transition to ensure business continuity, the company acknowledged the impact on its workforce. Maple Leaf Foods has pledged to support affected employees through the process, including exploring transfer opportunities at other company locations.
