Shanghai Electric Targets ASEAN Energy Shift With New Solutions
At the Enlit Asia 2026 conference in Jakarta, Shanghai Electric unveiled a strategy to accelerate regional decarbonization. The company is deploying a three-pronged approach focused on thermal power upgrades, island grid stabilization, and the production of green fuels for shipping and aviation across the Southeast Asian market.

The company’s initiative centers on three technical pillars designed for the specific geographic and economic realities of the ASEAN region. To manage carbon intensity, Shanghai Electric is introducing modular steam turbines and heavy-duty gas turbines capable of running on 30% hydrogen blends. These upgrades aim to retrofit existing coal-fired infrastructure while improving thermal efficiency.
For island-based energy networks, the firm is deploying a resilience package that integrates synchronous condensers, flywheels, and solar-storage pods to maintain frequency and voltage stability. Furthermore, the company is scaling its Power-to-X capabilities, utilizing green hydrogen and methanol synthesis. This effort builds on the Jilin Taonan project, which recently set a global record with an 8,000-ton green methanol bunkering operation, and now aims to support the maritime and aviation industries in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
These technical offerings are bolstered by Shanghai Electric’s existing footprint in the region, which includes the 3 x 350 MW Pelabuhan Ratu station in Indonesia and the 500 MW Samalaju project in Sarawak. By combining hardware manufacturing with local system integration, the company seeks to address the dual challenge of increasing power demand and the imperative to lower carbon emissions.
