Rode Shrinks Its Video Production Console to Cut Costs
Priced at $499, the new Rodecaster Video S enters the market as a scaled-down alternative to the company’s original production console. While it retains the core chroma keying and mixing capabilities of its predecessor, the device targets creators seeking a more accessible entry point into professional-grade streaming setups.
The Rodecaster Video S arrives just over a year after the launch of the original $1,199 console. By reducing the hardware footprint, Rode has cut the price by more than half, though the trade-off involves a reduction in connectivity. The new unit features three HDMI inputs and a single USB-C port, compared to the four HDMI inputs and dual-output configuration found on the original model.
Despite the smaller frame—which is roughly two inches shorter and 400 grams lighter—the hardware remains capable of handling 1080p video streams. It utilizes the same octa-core processor as its predecessor, ensuring that core functions like source switching and background replacement remain consistent. For established podcasters, this version offers a lower barrier to entry for incorporating video into audio-first workflows, bridging the gap between consumer webcams and expensive studio-grade switchers.
