The Digital Path to Purchase Is No Longer a Straight Line
Modern consumers are bypassing traditional search engines in favor of a fragmented discovery ecosystem, as two-thirds of shoppers now utilize AI tools to research products or spark gift ideas. This shift forces brands to abandon siloed marketing in favor of a strategy that spans social media, AI assistants, and community forums.

The report from Emplifi and Semrush highlights a fundamental change in how shoppers validate their buying decisions. Rather than relying on a single search bar, consumers fluidly transition between platforms. Social media now ranks as the top discovery channel, surpassing both retail websites and traditional search engines. This behavior is increasingly tied to the influence of peer-led communities; for instance, 85% of consumers trust product recommendations found on Reddit, and over a quarter intentionally append the platform's name to their search queries to surface authentic human feedback.
Simultaneously, AI has transitioned from a niche curiosity to a primary research tool. Semrush data shows that monthly visits to major LLM platforms surged from 2.3 million in June 2023 to 1.33 billion by June 2026. This explosion in AI usage has led to a 190-fold increase in AI-driven traffic to major U.S. retailers. As these tools become central to the research phase, the distinction between SEO, social media, and AI-assisted discovery is effectively dissolving. Brands that fail to integrate their presence across these connected surfaces risk losing visibility in a landscape where consumers demand both machine-speed information and human-verified consensus.
