Meteorologist Anthony Watts to Challenge Climate Narratives in Calgary

As global leaders prepare for the COP31 climate conference in Türkiye, the Calgary-based Friends of Science Society is positioning itself as a contrarian voice. On November 16, 2026, the organization will host meteorologist Anthony Watts to present an argument that current climate anxieties are based on flawed data rather than reality.

The event, titled "Why You Should No Longer Fear Global Warming aka 'Climate Change'," takes place at the Coast Calgary University Area Hotel. Watts, the founder of the long-running blog Watts Up With That?, plans to deconstruct popular climate narratives by citing datasets from agencies including NASA, NOAA, and the EPA. His presentation aims to categorize climate science into four core areas: extreme weather trends, environmental impacts, the reliability of climate models, and the accuracy of past apocalyptic forecasts.

Watts intends to argue that historical temperature peaks over the last 6,000 years surpass current levels and that metrics concerning hurricanes, heatwaves, and droughts show no objective worsening trend. A significant portion of his talk will address the "urban heat island" effect—an issue he famously highlighted in a 2011 paper—which he claims distorts temperature readings. Furthermore, he plans to discuss the retirement of the RCP 8.5 climate scenario, which officials deemed implausible in April 2026. This gathering serves as a direct challenge to the upcoming international policy discussions, with the Friends of Science Society maintaining that carbon dioxide emissions are not the primary driver of climate change, pointing instead toward solar influence.
