JMU Joins Statewide Lab-to-Launch Research Initiative
James Madison University has become the first R2 research institution to join the Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation’s Lab-to-Launch program. The partnership aims to streamline technology transfer and accelerate the commercialization of faculty research, extending a network previously exclusive to the state's six R1 research universities.

JMU President Jim Schmidt and VIPC CEO Joe Benevento formalized the agreement on October 6 in Richmond. The collaboration grants JMU researchers access to the Fast-Track License, a standardized, founder-friendly framework designed to reduce the legal and financial barriers typically associated with spinning off university intellectual property into private startups.
Beyond licensing, the initiative introduces Entrepreneurs-in-Residence to the Harrisonburg campus to bridge the gap between academic discovery and industry application. This move aligns with broader state efforts to leverage the $2.5 billion in annual research activity across Virginia's higher education system. By integrating the Shenandoah Valley into the existing Lab-to-Launch ecosystem, the university seeks to convert local scientific breakthroughs into tangible economic growth and regional commercial ventures.
