South Western Communications Updates School Safety Tech for Awareness Week

As schools observe America's Safe Schools Week this October, South Western Communications is pushing its neXus platform to the forefront. The system aims to solve the problem of fragmented security by pulling video, access control, and weapon detection into a single, interactive 3D interface for faster incident response.

The platform functions by integrating existing school hardware—such as intercoms, vape sensors, and surveillance cameras—without requiring districts to overhaul their current infrastructure. By aggregating these inputs, administrators gain a real-time visual map of their campus, which can trigger automated workflows like automatic lockdowns or immediate alerts to local law enforcement. This approach is designed to help districts meet safety mandates, including those required by Alyssa's Law.

Todd Lucy, president of SWC, noted that the platform leverages the company’s 50-year history to provide clarity during high-pressure situations. For districts with limited budgets, the ability to maintain current systems while adding modern software layers serves as a primary value proposition. Dr. Scott McWilliams, a former superintendent who now manages business development for neXus, stated that the platform fundamentally changed his former district's security posture by unifying disparate alerts into a single, actionable view. SWC currently supports these implementations across eight states, working with local partners to scale the technology nationwide.
