Finnish Citizens Demand Data Center Curbs After Google Deforestation

A petition calling for stricter oversight of data centers has surpassed 96,400 signatures, forcing the Finnish Parliament to debate the industry's footprint. The surge in public support follows Google's unauthorized felling of 250,000 trees across 815 acres in Muhos and Otanmäki to clear land for AI infrastructure projects.

The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority has ordered Google to suspend all work that alters the environment, citing a failure to conduct mandatory environmental impact assessments. The company faces an October 23 deadline to comply or risk enforcement proceedings and potential fines. Google’s Finland country manager, Antti Järvinen, claimed the firm acted on its best understanding of legislation at the time, but the destruction has ignited a broader national conversation regarding the trade-offs of hosting massive AI facilities.

Critics argue that the economic gains promised by the government are illusory. Jussi Kangasharju, a computer science expert at the University of Helsinki, noted that these facilities primarily serve international customers with little corporate tax contribution to the local economy. Meanwhile, residents report that the sudden clearing of biodiverse forests has disrupted wildlife, even driving wolves into local villages. While Prime Minister Petteri Orpo prioritizes AI investment, the petition demands new laws to regulate electricity consumption, ensure waste heat utilization, and impose fees that account for the environmental damage caused by land and water usage.
