Apple Prepares Major MacBook Pro Overhaul with OLED and Touchscreen

Apple recently debuted its latest 14-inch MacBook Pro featuring the M5 processor, but internal reports suggest a more radical departure is on the horizon. Next year, the company plans to integrate OLED display technology and touchscreen functionality into its flagship professional laptops, marking a significant shift in its hardware design philosophy.

Mark Gurman, citing sources familiar with the company’s internal roadmap, identifies the upcoming projects under codenames K114 and K116. These machines are expected to feature the M6 series of processors alongside a revamped chassis. To accommodate a touchscreen interface, Apple engineers are reportedly developing reinforced hinges designed to prevent the screen bounce often associated with touch-capable laptops. The display will likely adopt a hole-punch camera design, mirroring the Dynamic Island functionality currently found on iPhones.

This transition represents a pivot for Apple, which historically resisted touchscreen integration on Mac hardware, briefly experimenting with the short-lived Touch Bar before abandoning it in 2021. While the move aligns the MacBook Pro more closely with Windows-based competitors, the technological leap comes with a cost. The integration of OLED panels and touch-sensitive hardware is expected to drive retail prices up by several hundred dollars. These premium features will likely remain exclusive to the high-end Pro line initially, bypassing the more affordable MacBook Air models. Meanwhile, users can still anticipate incremental updates to the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max architecture arriving in early 2025.
