Anthropic’s IPO: Betting on AGI in a Land of Expensive Compute

Anthropic is preparing for a Nasdaq debut that could value the company at up to $2 trillion, a figure that hinges on the firm’s ability to turn its massive compute investments into a sustainable business. While the company claims an 11 percent non-GAAP EBITA margin, the path forward remains tethered to the high-stakes pursuit of AGI.

The S-1 filing reveals a company operating in a state of extreme financial ambition. Anthropic has moved from negative 94 percent gross margins on inference two years ago to a positive 85 percent margin today, a shift driven by aggressive compute efficiency gains. Despite these improvements, the firm remains heavily reliant on renting infrastructure from hyperscalers like Amazon, Google, and SpaceX. Currently, only about 30 percent of Anthropic’s compute is dedicated to inference-serving revenue; the majority is funneled into the research and training necessary to chase the next generation of frontier models.

Analysts suggest the real test for the company will be its transition from coding-specific tools into broader white-collar verticals like cybersecurity and bio-research. With 80 percent of its revenue generated from models released within the last six months, Anthropic faces constant pressure to maintain its lead against well-funded competitors like OpenAI and Google. While the firm’s leadership frames its mission around the creation of a 'digital god,' Wall Street will be watching whether this ideological pursuit can coexist with the cold reality of enterprise adoption and the need to justify trillions in future capital expenditure.
