Microsoft shifts strategy with massive voluntary buyout offer
Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to approximately 60,000 employees across the US, UK, Canada, and India, marking a significant escalation in the company's efforts to trim its workforce. The move signals a broader transition toward a leaner organization prioritized for heavy investment in AI infrastructure.

This offer represents a sharp expansion from earlier retirement packages that reached only 9,000 staff members. By reducing total headcount and operating costs, the company aims to sustain its aggressive spending on AI computing power. CEO Satya Nadella previously framed this shift as a strategy to increase the amount of hardware available to each remaining researcher, effectively prioritizing specialized technical capability over total employee count.
The frequency of staff reductions has accelerated, moving away from traditional annual cycles toward a pattern of rolling cuts. Recent months saw 4,800 workers depart from Xbox and commercial sales divisions. For the first time in ten years, Microsoft’s total headcount has recorded a year-over-year decline, confirming that the current restructuring is a fundamental pivot rather than a temporary adjustment.
