Apple Unveils macOS 27 Golden Gate with Revamped Siri AI
Apple has unveiled macOS 27 Golden Gate, a desktop update centering on deep Siri AI integration and a return to more classic interface aesthetics. While the release introduces a global opacity slider for Liquid Glass effects, the primary focus shifts toward cross-platform intelligence and the final abandonment of Intel-based hardware.
The new operating system marks a strategic pivot for Apple, prioritizing structural changes to Apple Intelligence and search functionality over incremental desktop tweaks. Users can now utilize a dedicated Siri app and query files directly through Spotlight, as demonstrated by the ability to generate comparison tables from multiple PDF documents. Visual Intelligence also arrives on the platform, allowing users to capture schedules or analyze e-commerce product pages via a dedicated keyboard shortcut.
Design choices in Golden Gate signal a partial retreat from the controversial Liquid Glass aesthetic introduced in the previous Tahoe release. Sidebar icons have regained their color, and window corner radii have been tightened to create a more cohesive visual hierarchy. For power users, the update brings enhanced ultrawide display support, including 5K at 120Hz, and mobile-inspired trackpad gestures for refreshing content in Safari and Mail.
Hardware compatibility remains a major friction point. Golden Gate officially ends support for Intel-based Macs, restricting the full suite of Apple Intelligence features to machines equipped with M3 chips and at least 12GB of memory. This leaves even some Apple silicon devices, such as the MacBook Neo, unable to access the most advanced dictation and voice customization tools.
