Apple to Sunset Intel Support Following macOS Tahoe Release

Matthew Firlik, Apple’s senior director of developer relations, confirmed that while the platform will continue to support current hardware, Tahoe represents the last major release for Intel-based machines. The company began its departure from Intel in 2020, eventually finalizing the transition across its entire product lineup with the 2023 Mac Pro. For users remaining on older hardware, Apple spokesperson Lauren Klug stated that security patches will persist for three years following the release of Tahoe.

Firlik framed the decision as a necessary pivot to maximize the potential of Apple silicon, which the company claims offers capabilities previously impossible on legacy chips. Developers are now being encouraged to prioritize native versions of their applications to align with the hardware shift. Beyond the architectural transition, macOS Tahoe introduces the Liquid Glass design language, expanded Spotlight search functionality, and native integration for iPhone Live Activities.
