Arturia MiniLab 37 hits the sweet spot for portable production
After testing countless portable MIDI controllers, the realization hits: 37 keys is the golden ratio for travel-ready music production. Arturia’s new $149 MiniLab 37 expands on its 25-key predecessor, providing just enough extra room to play complex chords and split-hand arrangements without sacrificing the convenience of a backpack-friendly footprint.
The device retains the familiar feature set of the MiniLab series: eight pads, eight endless encoders, four faders, and touch strips for modulation. While the build relies on a lightweight, slightly springy plastic chassis that prioritizes function over aesthetic luxury, it remains resilient enough for life on the road. The inclusion of a full-size five-pin MIDI DIN output ensures it plays nicely with hardware setups beyond a simple laptop connection.
Beyond the extra octave, the layout refinements define the upgrade. Arturia rearranged the interface to be shallower, eliminating the need to reach over pads or navigation strips to adjust parameters. While the tiny screen still makes menu diving tedious, the improved ergonomics and the sheer utility of the expanded keybed make this a standout value. It strikes a rare balance between immediate playability and the portability required by modern mobile producers.
