Sealed Super Mario Bros. Fetches Record $3 Million at Auction
A pristine copy of Super Mario Bros. has shattered all previous records, selling for $3 million at Heritage Auctions. This sale obliterates the $2 million benchmark set in 2021, cementing the title's status as the most valuable piece of gaming history ever traded on the open market.

The astronomical price tag is driven by the game's unique packaging. Unlike later versions protected by shrink wrap, this 1985 second-run copy features a glossy seal sticker, a production method discontinued shortly after. According to Heritage Auctions, this remains the earliest known sealed copy of the game in existence. The item carries a near-perfect 9.6 A++ grade from the Professional Sports Authenticator, adding significant weight to its provenance.
Vintage gaming collectibles have seen a rapid valuation surge in recent years. In July 2020, a copy of the same game sold for $114,000, a figure that now appears modest given the current market trajectory. Should the anonymous buyer choose to open the artifact, the auction house has included an NES console to facilitate actual gameplay.
