Ancient Americas Exhibition Debuts at Shanghai Museum

Nearly 3,000 artifacts from Mexico and Peru will transform the Shanghai Museum starting July 9, 2026. Titled "On Top of the World Tree," the exhibition spans 7,000 square meters of gallery space, offering a deep dive into the cosmology and material legacy of civilizations that once flourished across the Americas.

Following the museum's previous success with Egyptian antiquities, this new installation shifts focus to the Western Hemisphere. Organized in partnership with institutions in Mexico and Peru, the exhibition presents 1,129 distinct groups of objects. The galleries are split into two primary narratives: the belief systems and political authority of Mesoamerican societies, and the gold and silver artistry of Andean civilizations. The latter marks the largest display of Peruvian artifacts ever hosted in China.

To house the collection, the Shanghai Museum on People's Square is undergoing a complete transformation. Designers have converted 10,000 square meters into an immersive landscape, greeting visitors with a symbolic cornfield and motifs of jaguars and feathered serpents. This environment aims to ground the historical artifacts within the spiritual and physical landscapes of their origins. Tickets for the exhibition, which runs through November 14, 2027, are available via Trip.com or at the museum box office.
