Gavin Newsom Accuses Trump of Orchestrating Federal Probe Against Him
California Governor Gavin Newsom declared on Monday that he and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, are being targeted by a Department of Justice investigation. Newsom characterized the federal inquiry as a retaliatory abuse of power directed by President Donald Trump to undermine his potential 2028 presidential campaign.
In a video statement posted to social media, the governor alleged that federal agents have been questioning his family, friends, and former associates. He argued that these actions are not based on evidence of criminal activity but represent a desperate search for grounds to prosecute him. Newsom framed the probe as the latest entry in a pattern of politically motivated attacks against those who have challenged the president, placing himself alongside figures like former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
"Donald Trump is simply the most corrupt president in American history," Newsom stated, claiming the administration has transformed the Department of Justice into a personal instrument for rewarding allies and targeting opponents. While a source familiar with the matter told The New York Times that the investigation originated with federal law enforcement in California rather than Washington, critics point to the president's history of direct interference in legal matters. Last year, Trump inadvertently shared a message intended for Attorney General Pam Bondi urging the expedited indictment of political rivals, including Senator Adam Schiff. Newsom maintains that the pressure on his family will not succeed, asserting, "Donald Trump picked the wrong target. We have nothing to hide."
