Zum Expands Student Transit Tech to Rhode Island Districts

Rhode Island is set to become the 18th state to adopt the Zum Connected Mobility Experience, as the Scituate School Department and Johnston Public Schools finalize agreements to outsource their bus operations. The transition, scheduled for the 2026–2027 school year, aims to integrate real-time tracking and digital management across all local routes.

The partnerships signal a shift toward data-driven transit for the two districts, replacing legacy logistics with a centralized platform designed to improve transparency and reliability. By utilizing the company’s CMX software, administrators expect to gain deeper operational insights while providing families with real-time bus location updates and push notifications. Both districts cited the need for enhanced safety systems and consistent scheduling as primary drivers for the switch.

To manage the logistics of this expansion, the firm is launching a significant local recruitment drive. The company plans to hire more than 50 drivers to support the new Rhode Island service, offering training programs for uncertified candidates. Information sessions are scheduled for June 17 and June 18 at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Smithfield, where the company will begin building the local infrastructure needed to maintain its 98% average on-time performance rate. The move adds to an existing national portfolio that currently serves more than 4,500 schools across the United States.
