GOP Budget Proposal Diverts $1 Billion in Taxpayer Funds to Trump Ballroom

Despite repeated promises that his White House luxury ballroom would be financed through private donations, congressional Republicans unveiled a budget package on Monday that places the $1 billion bill squarely on American taxpayers, sparking intense backlash from Democratic lawmakers and government accountability advocates regarding the administration's fiscal priorities.

The proposal, introduced by Sen. Chuck Grassley, includes a $1 billion allocation for an "East Wing modernization project." This funding is earmarked for the site where Donald Trump demolished the original structure last year to make way for his planned ballroom. The broader reconciliation package also designates $30 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, alongside billions more for border security and the Department of Homeland Security.

Democratic legislators have denounced the move, pointing to the disparity between funding a private vanity project and failing to support struggling families. Rep. Brendan Boyle labeled the bill a disaster, noting that it provides no relief for rising food and energy costs or healthcare protection. Rep. Sean Casten called the prioritization offensive, while Rep. Yassamin Ansari noted the irony of taxpayers funding a project once promised to be privately financed.

External groups have joined the chorus of criticism. Lisa Gilbert of Public Citizen described the plan as a corrupt absurdity, while Kristen Crowell of Families Over Billionaires characterized the allocation as a glaring symbol of grift. Sen. Brian Schatz noted that the proposal forces a public vote, ensuring that members of Congress must officially go on the record regarding their support for the project.
