Wacaco Reinvents Immersion Brewing with the Cup-as-Press Prestina
Hong Kong-based Wacaco has unveiled the Prestina, a manual immersion coffee brewer that turns the drinking vessel itself into the pressing mechanism. By integrating the filter and press into a single compact unit, the device eliminates the need for electricity, paper filters, and separate brewing hardware for portable coffee enthusiasts.
The Prestina functions through a straightforward ritual: users combine 15 grams of medium-ground coffee with 240 milliliters of 90-degree Celsius water. After a one-minute infusion, the cup serves as the plunger, driving the brew through a built-in stainless steel filter. This design preserves natural coffee oils while producing a cleaner finish than standard French press methods.
Designed for extreme portability, the six-piece kit collapses into a 134 by 85 millimeter unit weighing just 254 grams. Hugo Cailleton, Wacaco’s co-founder and chief designer, noted that the breakthrough arrived by reimagining the cup not as a standalone accessory, but as an active component of the brewing architecture. This shift allowed the brand to reduce the device to its most essential, minimalist form.
Available in Sage Green, Clay Pink, and Coal Black, the Prestina retails for $29.90. The product will make its public debut at the World of Coffee event in Brussels, running from June 25 to 27.
