Vinitaly Targets South Africa as Strategic Foothold for African Expansion
With South Africa serving as a vital commercial gateway, Italian wine producers are intensifying their presence in the region. Recent trade forums in Cape Town, attended by ministers and industry leaders, underscored a concerted effort to shift from simple exports to structured, long-term partnerships across the burgeoning African market.

The initiative, held at The Westin Cape Town, brought together high-level officials, including Italy’s Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida and his South African counterpart John Steenhuisen. The collaboration between the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) and Vinitaly aims to leverage South Africa’s established wine culture to introduce a broader range of Italian regional diversity to local and continental distributors.
At the heart of the campaign, a masterclass led by Masters of Wine Richard Kershaw and Andrea Lonardi highlighted thirteen estates, ranging from Northern Italy to the southern islands. Beyond the technical tasting, the event served as a platform for trade professionals to engage directly with producers, emphasizing the "Italian soul" of the products rather than individual labels. Federico Bricolo, President of Veronafiere, noted that the Cape Town engagement is specifically designed to treat South Africa as a bridge to wider African trade routes.
The program concluded with a gala dinner curated by Chef Enrico Derflingher, showcasing the synergy between Italian culinary heritage and wine. As Vinitaly prepares for its 59th edition in Verona, this push into the African market signals a shift toward more targeted international growth, supported by data-driven trade agreements and educational initiatives.
