Iran Reports Progress in Swiss Peace Talks Despite Escalating Threats
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reported significant breakthroughs in peace negotiations held in Switzerland late Sunday, even as the diplomatic process faced severe strain from military threats by U.S. President Donald Trump and the ongoing Israeli offensive against Lebanon, which continues to jeopardize the fragile high-stakes dialogue.

Araghchi credited persistent mediation from Pakistan and Qatar for securing a commitment to establish a deconfliction cell, intended to halt military operations in Lebanon as outlined in a recently signed memorandum of understanding. The agreement also includes provisions to lift the U.S. blockade on Iran, release frozen assets, and implement a large-scale reconstruction plan. Despite this progress, the Iranian delegation departed the venue on Sunday following reports of threats from the U.S. administration to target Iranian diplomats, an act Araghchi described as a direct violation of the memorandum’s non-aggression clauses.
Pakistan and Qatar confirmed in a joint statement that a roadmap is now in place to reach a final settlement within 60 days. This framework includes a dedicated communication line to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the path to a broader resolution remains obstructed by Israel’s refusal to withdraw from its security zone in Lebanon. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz explicitly stated that the military has no intention of vacating the Beaufort region, dismissing the peace negotiations as irrelevant to Israeli security objectives in the Galilee.
