Dbrand transforms the Steam Machine into a Portal Companion Cube

The boxy silhouette of Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine has found its inevitable destiny in the hands of Dbrand. The accessory maker is crafting a limited-edition Companion Cube skin, turning the hybrid gaming console into a faithful replica of the iconic, heart-stamped block from the Portal series.

Dbrand CEO Adam Ijaz confirmed the shell attaches directly to the console’s chassis, specifically engineered to avoid obstructing air intakes or the rear exhaust. While the design currently remains under refinement to ensure accessibility for the device’s various ports, Ijaz views the hardware as an exceptional canvas for further aesthetic modifications, with GameCube and Minecraft-themed skins already in development.

The project arrives as an answer to a challenge Valve engineers seemingly anticipated. During a hands-on preview, Valve engineer Steve Cardinali noted that while the company did not pursue a Portal aesthetic itself, he expected someone else would. Dbrand is currently targeting a 2026 release window for the shell, though exact pricing and whether the launch will coincide with the console's early 2026 debut remain unannounced.
