Childbirth Costs Vary Sharply Across U.S. States
A new analysis from the nonprofit FAIR Health reveals a stark disparity in maternity care costs, with the national median for an in-network C-section reaching $19,911. While families navigate these significant expenses, geographic location remains a primary driver of price, creating a landscape where costs can fluctuate by tens of thousands of dollars.

The organization’s updated Cost of Giving Birth Tracker highlights Alaska as the most expensive state for maternity procedures. In Alaska, the median allowed amount for a vaginal delivery hits $30,585, while a C-section reaches $42,044. Conversely, Alabama reports the lowest median costs, with vaginal deliveries priced at $10,275 and C-sections at $11,281.
These figures represent the total allowed amount negotiated between insurers and providers for in-network care, covering facility fees, anesthesia, and routine supplies. By aggregating data from a repository of over four billion commercial insurance claims, the tool aims to provide transparency for patients and policymakers. Beyond the extremes of Alaska and Alabama, states like New Jersey and Mississippi consistently appear at the high and low ends of the spectrum, respectively, illustrating how regional healthcare markets influence the financial burden of childbirth.
