Valve Sets $1,049 Entry Price for Steam Machine

Valve has confirmed that its Steam Machine will hit the market on June 29, carrying a starting price of $1,049. To manage initial demand for the living room PC, the company is implementing a randomized reservation queue, with invitations to purchase scheduled to begin rolling out late next month.

The hardware lineup includes four distinct configurations, with the base 512GB model starting at $1,049 and the premium 2TB version reaching $1,428 when bundled with a Steam Controller. Those opting for the higher-capacity 2TB units will receive additional customization options, specifically red fabric and solid walnut faceplates to replace the standard black finish.

This pricing strategy puts the device in a difficult position against current-generation consoles. While a PlayStation 5 Pro retails for $899.99, the Steam Machine commands a significantly higher premium despite offering performance that reviews suggest is roughly on par with the original PS5. Valve maintains that these prices reflect the actual cost of components rather than subsidized hardware, positioning the device as a versatile Linux PC capable of accessing extensive existing Steam libraries. Following a series of delays linked to global memory and storage shortages, the June launch marks the culmination of a project that Valve previewed alongside its Steam Frame VR headset in late 2025.
