BayPort Foundation Ups Scholarship Funding to $150,000

Thirty-five students across Virginia have secured a combined $100,000 in scholarship funding this year, as the BayPort Foundation eyes a major expansion. The Newport News-based organization plans to boost its annual commitment to $150,000 next year, shifting its focus toward tuition-heavy pathways and vocational certification programs.

The upcoming funding increase aims to bolster the 2x2 educational model, which allows students to complete two years at a community college before transferring to a four-year institution. Under this expanded framework, the Foundation intends to cover nearly the entire annual cost of community college tuition for participants. Beyond traditional degrees, the program is also broadening its scope to offer greater flexibility for working adults seeking certifications and career advancement.

To celebrate the 2026 cohort, BayPort has teamed up with WAVY-TV 10 and FOX43 TV to broadcast a series of recognitions titled the Scholarship Salute. Running through July 30, the features highlight the diverse group of recipients—ranging from high school graduates to students at institutions like Carnegie Mellon and the University of Virginia—who are leveraging these funds for trade schools, vocational training, and university study.
