Downtown L.A. Law Group Faces Class Action Over Out-of-State Fees
A proposed class action filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court accuses Downtown L.A. Law Group LLP of collecting contingency fees for personal injury cases handled in jurisdictions where its attorneys lacked proper licensure. The suit claims the firm failed to disclose these unauthorized practices to its clients across multiple states.

Plaintiff Obioha Nwaogu initiated the litigation, targeting the firm and specific partners for allegedly operating in Texas, Florida, Maryland, Arizona, Iowa, Michigan, Tennessee, and Virginia without the necessary legal standing. The complaint asserts that the firm negotiated settlements and extracted contingency fees despite these regulatory gaps, effectively shielding the licensure status from the clients involved.
Shawn Azizzadeh, counsel for the plaintiff at Bedford Law Group, maintains that consumers possess an inherent right to verify the authorization of their representation. The lawsuit seeks full restitution and disgorgement of fees, citing public State Bar disciplinary records as the basis for the allegations. While the claims remain contested and no liability has been established, the firm is currently seeking to identify additional clients who retained DTLA or its affiliated entities—including Lone Star Injury Law Firm and Normandie Law Firm—for non-California claims.
