Phia’s $35.5 Million Series A Gets a Nolita Bodega Makeover
A lineup of A-list investors, from Khloé Kardashian to Ice Spice, now graces the windows of a Nolita deli. Phia, the fashion-meets-AI startup co-founded by Phoebe Gates and Sophia Kianni, has bypassed traditional tech press releases to announce its $35.5 million Series A funding round at a local bodega on Kenmare Street.
The blue-and-black advertisement stands in stark contrast to the store’s utilitarian reality, where construction workers grab deli sandwiches beneath a flickering sign advertising cigarettes and soda. While the display highlights a powerhouse roster of backers—including Khosla Ventures, Mindy Kaling, and The Chainsmokers—it remains conspicuously silent on what the startup’s AI tool actually does.
Retail consultant Carol Spieckerman suggests the unconventional placement is a calculated move rather than a quirky branding exercise. By positioning the ad in a high-traffic neighborhood for industry insiders, Phia is utilizing "business-to-business marketing masquerading as out-of-home advertising." The goal is to project momentum to potential retail partners and decision-makers who frequent the area, rather than simply informing the average shopper. The strategy appears to be working: the display has already drawn public curiosity from venture capitalists, including Eniac Ventures founder Hadley Harris, who questioned the unusual choice of venue on social media.
