EMU Caps Tuition Hikes While Overhauling Fee Structure
Eastern Michigan University has approved a 2.5% undergraduate tuition increase for the 2026-27 academic year, marking the smallest hike among Michigan public universities announced to date. The decision, finalized by the Board of Regents on June 25, accompanies a significant restructuring of student fees to improve financial transparency.

The board’s vote sets the undergraduate rate increase at 2.5%, while graduate and doctoral programs will see a 3.0% adjustment. To simplify costs, the university is consolidating multiple auxiliary charges into a single $225-per-semester Student Services Fee. This shift eliminates several specific costs, including the registration fee, the new student fee, and the recreation center fee. A hybrid course fee is also slated for removal starting in the spring of 2027.
This new fee framework, which supports campus counseling, career services, and recreation facilities, is integrated into a $318.3 million general fund budget. President Brendan Kelly stated that the move aims to provide students and families with a more predictable view of their educational investment. While regional peers have signaled tuition increases near 4%, EMU’s latest move keeps its rate hikes as the lowest in the state for the coming cycle. The board has authorized President Kelly to adjust these figures should the final state budget necessitate changes to comply with institutional tuition restraint caps.
