4DMedical Gains TGA Approval for Non-Contrast Lung Imaging in Australia

Australian respiratory imaging firm 4DMedical has secured Therapeutic Goods Administration approval for its CT:VQ technology, allowing the company to deploy its software-based ventilation and perfusion analysis across the country. The system extracts functional lung data from standard chest scans, bypassing the need for specialized nuclear medicine equipment.

The TGA registration marks a significant expansion for the Melbourne-based company, which has already introduced the technology to major U.S. health systems including Stanford and the Cleveland Clinic. By utilizing existing hospital infrastructure, the platform offers a pathway for clinics to perform functional lung assessments without the traditional reliance on radioactive tracers or injected contrast agents.

Andreas Fouras, founder and CEO of 4DMedical, noted that the high density of CT scanners across Australia makes the region a prime candidate for rapid implementation. The software is designed to integrate into current diagnostic workflows, which may alleviate pressure on facilities that currently rely on dedicated nuclear medicine services. This broader diagnostic reach is intended to improve respiratory care access in both metropolitan and rural settings by converting routine scans into detailed, functional insights.
