Australian Nerve Repair Technology Deployed to Ukraine War Zones
A coalition of Australian donors and medical firm Orthocell has launched a humanitarian pipeline to supply Remplir™ collagen devices to Ukraine, addressing an urgent need for reconstructive surgery among the 400,000 victims of conflict-related trauma, including soldiers and civilians suffering from severe blast and nerve crush injuries.

The initiative follows an initial shipment delivered in April 2025, coordinated by Professor Fiona Wood and UK defense surgeons. A new supply of 200 devices is currently in transit, supported by a consortium of corporate backers including the Minderoo Foundation, Wyllie Group, and Gilbert + Tobin. The Ukraine Crisis Appeal has also committed AUD $10,000 to sustain the program.
Orthocell CEO Paul Anderson noted that the product, which received FDA clearance last year, is proving vital for treating injuries that traditional suturing often exacerbates. By creating a bioactive chamber for tissue regeneration, the collagen-based device avoids the fibrosis and neuroma formation frequently associated with surgical repairs of blast trauma. Beyond material aid, the partnership facilitates knowledge-sharing between Australian and Ukrainian surgeons to standardize advanced reconstructive techniques in field hospitals.
