Queen Mary 2 Anchors America’s 250th Independence Day in New York
Against a backdrop of fireworks and the roar of a 150-aircraft flypast, the Queen Mary 2 served as the maritime centerpiece for the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations. As the world’s only true ocean liner, the vessel anchored in New York Harbour, hosting live broadcasts and marking a historic transatlantic bond.
The July 4, 2026, festivities brought together the largest maritime gathering in city history. More than 100 vessels navigated the Hudson River in an International Parade of Sail, including 47 tall ships from 20 nations. The Queen Mary 2 occupied a prime position for the International Naval Review, where 37 U.S. and allied naval vessels were formally acknowledged, followed by a high-altitude display led by the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels.
This anniversary carries deep resonance for the cruise line, as July 4 also marks the 1840 launch of the company's first transatlantic steamship service. Since the arrival of the Hibernia in 1847, Cunard has maintained an unbroken connection to the Port of New York. During the event, guests aboard the liner witnessed the parade from a front-row vantage point, a sentiment echoed by Cunard President Katie McAlister, who noted that the ship serves as a living symbol of the transatlantic story. The celebration, which featured a live taping by NBC’s TODAY show, underscored the enduring role of the liner as both a vessel of travel and a historic fixture of the New York waterfront.
