The Department of Energy acknowledged in a recent court filing that it targeted 284 renewable energy projects for termination because their locations were in states that voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. The agency admitted that no programmatic, statutory, or cost-based factors justified the rescissions, which were orchestrated by the Office of Management and Budget after a wider review of over 600 Biden-era awards.

In a letter to Energy Secretary Chris Wright and OMB Director Russell Vought, the Democratic caucus argued the administration exceeded its legal authority while undermining economic competitiveness and domestic manufacturing. The senators warned that using federal funding as a tool to punish political opposition signals a dangerous erosion of the rule of law, effectively conditioning basic government services on electoral loyalty rather than public need.
