Americans Prefer Resource Stability Over AI Speed

While 90% of respondents acknowledge that AI is a permanent fixture in the modern economy, this acceptance hits a wall when local costs are factored in. Residents express significant anxiety regarding the physical demands of data centers, with 70% fearing higher electricity bills and 69% worrying about the depletion of local water resources. Furthermore, 89% of participants argue that tech companies must offer tangible benefits to the communities hosting these facilities.

The data suggests that familiarity breeds support. Users who actively engage with AI tools are nearly four times more likely to back local data center construction than non-users, at 43% versus 12%. Generational divides also play a role: Millennials demonstrate the highest levels of adoption and support, whereas Gen Z remains notably skeptical. Despite the industry's focus on AI, public awareness remains fragmented, as fewer than half of those surveyed realize that the same data centers supporting advanced AI also power everyday tools like cloud storage, social media, and video streaming.
