Farmer sentiment recovers as July barometer hits 126

After three months of steady decline, American farmer sentiment saw a notable rebound in July. The Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer climbed 13 points to reach 126, fueled by a surge in current conditions and a more positive outlook for the months ahead among producers nationwide.

The survey, which polled 405 farmers between July 13 and 17, recorded a 20-point increase in the Current Conditions Index and an 11-point rise in Future Expectations. Michael Langemeier, director of Purdue's Center for Commercial Agriculture, attributed the shift to stronger crop prices during the survey period. Despite the uptick, high input costs remain a primary burden, with 46% of producers identifying them as the most significant challenge to their operations.

Financial outlooks remain tempered; while only 13% of farmers report being better off than last year, nearly one-quarter anticipate improvement over the next 12 months. This uncertainty is driving a sharp interest in risk management education, specifically in marketing strategies. Looking toward 2027, most growers expect cash rental rates to remain stable, though 19% anticipate increases between 5% and 10%. While optimism persists regarding agricultural exports, sentiment toward long-term farmland values cooled in July, with the index falling 14 points.
