Google Sheds Flat Design for Vibrant Gradient Icons
Moving away from the rigid, multi-colored circular motifs that defined its software suite for years, Google is transitioning its app icons toward a softer, gradient-heavy aesthetic. This visual overhaul, first spotted by 9to5Google, signals a departure from flat design trends in favor of more playful, AI-integrated imagery.

The updated design language introduces rounded corners and gentle transitions between pastel tones and saturated primary colors. This shift is already visible in the core Google G logo, alongside Gemini, Photos, and Maps. Beyond mere aesthetics, the redesign addresses functional layout issues; productivity tools like Sheets, Slides, and Forms are abandoning the traditional portrait-oriented paper look in favor of landscape formats that better reflect how users interact with digital documents.
While most updates improve visual distinction, the execution varies. The Chat icon adopts a simplified green form reminiscent of classic Hangouts branding, while others, such as Keep, have drawn criticism for a jarring departure from previous iterations. Though Google has not announced a specific deployment date, the rapid expansion of these assets across its ecosystem suggests a broad, imminent rollout.
