Hansa Biopharma marks first commercial Idefirix use in Australia
A patient in Australia has undergone a successful living donor kidney transplant following treatment with Idefirix, marking the first commercial application of the therapy in the country. The procedure, authorized by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, provides a new pathway for highly sensitized individuals previously facing significant barriers to transplantation.

The milestone signifies a shift for Hansa Biopharma as it expands its footprint in the Australian transplant community. CEO Renée Aguiar-Lucander noted that the company intends to build further clinical experience with the drug across both living and deceased donor programs. To track long-term results, the patient’s outcomes will be monitored through an established national registry, with findings potentially contributing to future scientific research on the therapy’s real-world efficacy.
Idefirix, an antibody-cleaving enzyme, is designed to address the immunological hurdles faced by highly sensitized patients who carry donor-specific antibodies. These patients often endure longer wait times for compatible organs due to the risk of transplant rejection. By clearing these antibodies, the treatment aims to improve access for those who might otherwise remain ineligible under standard allocation systems.
