METLEN Hits Commissioning Milestone at Cheshire Waste-to-Energy Plant

A plume of smoke signals the final push for the Protos Energy Recovery Facility in Cheshire, where METLEN has successfully ignited its first load of non-recyclable waste. This operational breakthrough marks the transition into hot commissioning for the site, which aims to convert residual household trash into baseload power.

Once the facility reaches full capacity, it will process 500,000 tonnes of waste annually, producing up to 49.9MW of electricity—sufficient to supply 90,000 homes. Beyond power generation, the plant integrates into the circular economy by recovering ferrous and non-ferrous metals, while transforming bottom ash into construction aggregates. METLEN served as the strategic turnkey partner for the project, working alongside Encyclis and Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH to navigate significant technical and financial hurdles during development.

The project serves as a proving ground for METLEN’s M RESET platform, which consolidates the company’s renewable and power project divisions. Despite industry-wide pressures from material inflation and supply-chain volatility, the firm maintains a decade-long footprint in the UK energy market, with over 90 projects ranging from grid infrastructure to battery storage and HVDC converter stations. Moving forward, the company intends to apply lessons from the Protos site to ensure future thermal power projects align strictly with budget and timeline targets.
