New Pennsylvania Online Course Trains Educators on Organ Donation

Developed by the Pennsylvania Departments of Education and Health alongside Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13, the online toolkit removes geographical barriers to training. Teachers can access lesson plans, anatomical illustrations, and research projects designed to help students understand the science behind transplantation and the impact of the national waiting list. The curriculum also addresses common misconceptions, distinguishing between living and deceased donation to ensure students can make informed decisions when they become eligible to register as donors.

Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen emphasized the dual value of the curriculum, noting that it allows students to explore both the selfless nature of donation and the medical science driving the field. The initiative builds on a legacy of state-led advocacy that began with the 1994 Governor Casey Act. By digitizing these resources, officials aim to scale the reach of the Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness program, which also connects schools to potential grant funding for classroom initiatives. The project is supported by partnerships with organizations including Donate Life Pennsylvania, the Gift of Life Institute, and the Center for Organ Recovery & Education.
