Mooi Plaats Solar Project Launches in Northern Cape

The 283 MWp Mooi Plaats Solar PV Plant has officially commissioned its Genius Tracker 1P system, marking a milestone for South Africa’s Koruson 2 renewable energy cluster. Developed by Envusa Energy, the site now serves as a primary power source for Anglo American’s mining operations across the Northern Cape.

Located near Noupoort, the facility is engineered to withstand extreme temperatures, high winds, and heavy dust—environmental hurdles that necessitated a robust tracker design. The installation supports the decarbonization goals of Kumba Iron Ore, De Beers, and Valterra Platinum by generating nearly 360 million kWh of clean electricity annually.

Envusa Energy, a joint venture between EDF Power Solutions and Anglo American, oversaw the project with CEEC/CGGC serving as the EPC contractor. Beyond its technical output, the development created over 1,600 construction jobs and directed R20 million toward local socio-economic initiatives. GameChange Energy CEO Vikas Bansal noted that the system was specifically selected to ensure reliable performance despite the demanding regional conditions.
