SellYourWay.org Adds Tool to Vet Business Intermediaries
Selling a company is often a once-in-a-lifetime milestone, yet many owners lack a framework to evaluate their representation. SellYourWay.org, an initiative of the International Business Brokers Association, has launched an interactive resource to help owners identify the specific qualifications of a Certified Business Intermediary.

The new feature outlines six benchmarks that distinguish a Certified Business Intermediary (CBI) from general brokers. To earn the designation, professionals must maintain active membership in the IBBA, complete 68 credit hours of specialized coursework, and demonstrate expertise in valuation methods—including direct market data and excess earnings analysis. Beyond academic requirements, candidates are vetted on practical experience, having served as the lead broker on at least three successful deals.
Emily Bowler, executive director of the IBBA, stated that the initiative aims to bring integrity and technical rigor to the transaction process. Because retaining the status requires ongoing education every three years, the tool serves as a guide for owners to confirm their broker remains current on shifting market conditions. By centralizing these standards, the platform provides a roadmap for business owners to navigate the complexities of valuation, negotiation, and final sale with greater confidence.
