Natura Resources Secures DOE Salt for MSR-1 Reactor Deployment
A shipment of FLiBE salt arrived in Abilene, Texas, on September 18, linking the legacy of the 1960s Molten Salt Reactor Experiment to modern commercial development. The material, provided by the Department of Energy, serves as a critical component for Natura Resources as it builds the MSR-1 demonstration reactor at Abilene Christian University.
The delivery of this specialized coolant, facilitated through Idaho National Laboratory, marks a shift from experimental research to industrial application. The FLiBE salt contains 99.99% enriched lithium-7, a configuration essential for minimizing tritium generation during reactor operations. By securing this supply, Natura Resources effectively mitigates a major supply-chain hurdle for its liquid-fueled, low-pressure reactor design.
Jordan Robison, CEO of Natura Resources, described the transfer as a generational handoff of American nuclear innovation. The MSR-1 serves as a proving ground for the company’s technology, intended to generate operational data for future commercial units. These reactors aim to provide baseload power while supporting the production of medical isotopes and clean water infrastructure. The project builds upon the performance benchmarks set by the original Oak Ridge experiment, which logged over 13,000 hours of operation between 1965 and 1969.
